Cancrelats (2015) is a suite of five miniatures for two violins, drawing inspiration from Franz Kafka’s iconic novella The Metamorphosis (1915). In Kafka’s tale, a traveling salesman awakens to find himself grotesquely transformed into a giant insect, a surreal and tragic meditation on alienation, identity, and the oppressive weight of societal and familial expectations.
Through these miniatures, Francis St-Germain captures five dimensions of the protagonist’s disoriented perspective, offering a parallel commentary on the multifaceted nature of estrangement in contemporary life. Infused with the grotesque imagery of Kafka’s narrative, the music examines the absurdities of human existence, delving into the tensions between self-perception and external relationships. It evokes a visceral range of emotions—revulsion, yearning, and dread—while prompting reflection on the inevitability of fate and the stifling monotony of social conventions.
Cancrelats premiered at the Université de Montréal on November 25, 2015.
