MOLÉCULES
DURATIONAL PERFORMANCE FOR LIVE COMPOSER & ENSEMBLE
Molécules (2017) is a series of long-duration events by Francis St-Germain, blending live music composition and improvisation. Each iteration of Molécules is a unique, ephemeral exploration of sound, movement, time, chance, and spatialization, with variable duration and instrumentation. The project emphasizes the democratization of contemporary art by inviting both performers and the audience to actively shape the creative process.
At the heart of Molécules is real-time composition. The composer generates musical ideas live—using traditional notation, text-based scores, or verbal instructions—adapting these ideas in response to the performers’ interpretations. No pre-written material is used. Performers improvise based on these instructions, and if they do not resonate with a given idea, they are encouraged to contribute by sharing their own with the composer.
The performance unfolds in unconventional, in-situ spaces that function as “third places.” These settings invite the audience to move freely, engaging with the performance from multiple perspectives. They are also encouraged to contribute ideas, influencing the composition’s evolution.
Each Molécule lasts a minimum of three hours. This extended duration is important as it allows for the development of a distinct musical language born from the unique interactions of each event between performers, composer, and audience.
Molécule I took place at LOCAL 250, a temporary gallery in Montreal’s Latin Quarter, lasting four hours. Molécule II was held at MaBrasserie, a microbrewery in the Rosemont neighborhood, with a duration of three hours.
